In 1965, after carefully studying the already
successful Japanese fishing industry, Shui-Lai Chen, the first generation
of Chens, began his own one ship company in his hometown of Kaohsiung,
which at that time was an emerging port city in southern Taiwan. The
resulting company, Fong Kuo Fishery Co., Ltd., was immediately profitable
and quickly leaped forward to guide the newly begun Taiwanese fishing
industry into success in the world market. This achievement led directly
to Shui-Lai Chen's creation of Fong Kuo Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., later
that same year. |

Today, Fong Kuo Shipbuilding specializes in building fishing vessels
up to 1000 tons and reefer vessels up to 3000 tons. This shipyard
alone, in its over 40 years of business has built over 400 vessels.
In fact, over one-half of the fishing vessels functioning in and
out of the waters of Taiwan have been built by Fong Kuo Shipbuilding.
Fong Kuo Fishery also continued to grow, adding many new vessels,
built by Fong Kuo Shipbuilding and Ching Fu Shipbuilding, to its
fleet over the years and to this day is still one of the largest
and most powerful tuna purse seiner companies in Taiwan.
