The Shui-Lai Chen Foundation
The Shui-Lai Chen Foundation was established in 1998 after the passing of our beloved grandfather and the founder of the Chen Family businesses. Our purpose in creating a foundation in his name was to continue his lifetime of selfless contribution to the improvement of the Taiwanese fishing and shipbuilding industries and the families of those involved. Each year our foundation gives scholarships to deserving university students who are studying naval architecture and marine biology. Our foundation also yearly awards superior teachers and professors in these same fields. We also sponsor all types of related activities.. Most Recent Activities:

Cultural and Social Contributions This Past Year:

  • Contributed to the fund for the building of a new Protection from Domestic Violence Center for women in Kaohsiung City.
  • Subsidized various artistic and literary groups in Kaohsiung City as well as sponsored their artistic and literary activities.
  • Contributed to the fund of the Juvenile Association of Kaohsiung, which was established to help build good character and morals in our youth of today.
  • Contributed to the Taiwanese Opera Association to allow then to hold public activities

Educational Contributions This Past Year:

  • Contributed to the relevant departments of Sun Yat-Sen University, National University of Kaohsiung, and National Kaohsiung Marine University for the study, research and training in the fields of ocean development, environmental protection and ship design.
  • Purchased teaching aids and research equipment for National Kaohsiung Marine University in the above mentioned departments.
  • Sponsored Dr. Liu of Sun Yat-Sen University in his research.
  • Donated to the Kaohsiung City Educational, Athletic and Administration Departments for the commendation of outstanding teachers and contributors
  • Contributed to several local schools' Athletic Departments for the training of their athletes.

Literary Contributions This Past Year:

  • Sponsored national lectures concerning Natural Science for the National University of Kaohsiung.
  • Cooperated with the literary departments of the above mentioned universities to hold lectures and seminars on management and business restructuring.
  • Worked with public welfare groups and literary groups in Kaohsiung City to hold special lectures and seminars.

Scholarships This Past Year:

  • At Chung Cho Elementary School in Chi-Chin Island awarded the annual Shui-Lai Chen Scholarship for exceptional students
  • Establish a Shui-Lai Chen Scholarship for the encouragement of teenage achievement.
  • Awarded scholarships for students in Kaohsiung City in need of financial aid in order to continue their studies and for students who wish to begin their first business
  • Donated to the scholarship funds of Sun Yat-Sen University and the National University of Kaohsiung for outstanding students.
  • Sponsored in conjunction with the Kaohsiung City Government special scholarships to award students who demonstrate excellent filial piety towards their parents and elderly people.
